A new study has shown that this test can be performed as soon as the child reaches age 5. Why would you want to do this test at all and why so early in life?
First, you need to understand that color blindness is not a blindness at all. Rather it is an inability to see colors accurately. This can make learning more difficult. But if known, specialized lesson plans can be developed that take this into account allowing the child to succeed.
If the color blindness goes undetected, it can be very hard on the child who might get grouped in the wrong academic track.
