A new study looked at a large population of individuals age 18 and older who also had anxiety and/or depression. It found a significant association between these diagnoses and dry eye. So if you have anxiety and/or depression and have uncomfortable eyes that get red, tear and burn, you probably have dry eyes and should come in to have them assessed and treated.
What You Need To Know
This retrospective, case-control study of a large population including patients age 18 and older demonstrated a significant association between the diagnoses of dry eye and anxiety and/or depression.
The authors suggest that both eye care and primary care providers should be aware of the association between dry eye and anxiety/depression, as well as consider these potential comorbidities when addressing dry eye complaints.
